Travel between Hangzhou and Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang province is expected to become more convenient as the high-speed railway network connecting the two cities saw a breakthrough recently, local media outlets reported.

The bridge over the existing Hangzhou-Huangshan high-speed railway had one of its continuous beams joined recently. The bridge was designed to be especially long, with a total length of 4,149.55 meters, and the beam was the first and the largest of the project to be joined.

In addition to the Hangzhou-Huangshan high-speed railway, the bridge crosses over Dayuan Brook, Hangzhou-Xin'an River-Jingdezhen expressway, and Fengchuan Avenue.

It plays a key supporting role in the second phase of the Hangzhou-Wenzhou high-speed railway project. It started construction in March 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2024. Due to its location in Tonglu, a picturesque county administered by Hangzhou, the project must follow strict environmental protection criteria.

The second phase of the Hangzhou-Wenzhou high-speed railway costs a total of 9.48 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) and features a designed maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour and two new stations in East Tonglu county and Pujiang county in Jinhua.

The railway is expected to shorten travel time between Hangzhou and Wenzhou to within one hour and contribute to the one-hour transport network in Zhejiang province. (ZhongXin)
