Wenzhou Yueqing jewelry dragon to "fly" abroad

On the morning of Dec. 12, the launching ceremony to send Yueqing jewelry dragon abroad was held simultaneously in New York and Yueqing, a county-level city of Wenzhou in East China’s Zhejiang Province. Representatives of the Yueqing Association of New York, the Committee of Asian and other organizations attended the ceremony online and offline. Traveling thousands of miles journey all the way to the United States, the jewelry dragon, together with Huangyang wooden carving, fine-line paper-cutting, blue dyeing and other intangible cultural heritages, will be displayed at the first Ouyue Cultural Festival to be held in New York in May 2023, spreading Yueqing’s intangible cultural heritages, local Wenzhou culture and China’s stories well in the United States.

As early as 2014, the Yueqing jewelry dragon was listed as one of the representative items of China’s national intangible cultural heritage. The one produced by Lin Shunkui, the fifth-generation inheritor of Yueqing Jewelry Dragon, even won the Shanhua Award, the highest honor of Chinese folk art and culture.

The jewelry dragon to be exported this time is 5.2 meters long, 3.5 meters high and 2.3 meters wide, taking the shape of a boat, with the dragon head as the fore and the dragon tail as the stern. It took Lin, Huang and their family members over a year to finally produce such a complex artifact. (ZhongXin)
