In July 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Denmark, the Slagelse Garden Youth Brass Band from Slagelse, Denmark, traveled over 8,000 kilometers to Wenzhou at the invitation of Wenzhou University of Technology. This vibrant group of 44 young musicians embarked on a unique cultural exchange journey in a city renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit known as the“Four Thousand Spirit.” Over nine days, they traversed the streets, schools, enterprises, and villages of Hangzhou and Wenzhou, sharing music and fostering friendship with locals and students alike.

At the opening ceremony of the Sino-Danish Cultural Exchange event hosted by Wenzhou University of Technology, the Danish band performed iconic Chinese songs such as"The March of the Volunteers" and"Ode to the Motherland." As the familiar melodies filled the air, the entire audience stood in respect. One student remarked,“Hearing our national anthem played by these Danish teenagers with their golden hair and blue eyes made me feel incredibly proud. Their respect and sincerity are the most touching aspects of cultural exchange.”
Vice President Zheng Hua delivered a speech that vividly explained the profound meaning of the“Four Thousand Spirit”— walking thousands of miles, speaking thousands of words, thinking of thousands of ways, and enduring countless hardships. It was this very spirit that contributed to the creation of the Wenzhou model during China’s early reform and opening-up period, which significantly influenced the development of private enterprise in the country.
“Music is the best diplomat,” said an official from the Wenzhou Foreign Affairs Office. During their nine-day visit, the Danish band gave seven formal performances and participated in twelve school exchange activities, engaging with more than 3,000 Chinese students. Each stop left behind unforgettable musical memories.
“This has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said the band president, his eyes red with emotion as he hugged and thanked those who came to see them off.“I am sure we will carry back precious memories and stories to share with our families and friends for many years to come.”
As the plane took off, it carried away a band rich with experiences and memories, leaving behind countless heartwarming musical stories and a new chapter in Sino-Danish friendship. This musical journey proved that cultural differences are not barriers but sources of mutual inspiration. Music is not only art but also a bridge connecting hearts. As one participant put it,“We may speak different languages, but when the music plays, our hearts beat as one.”(Zhang Yanbin)
